Description:Holter Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Missouri River in central Montana in the United States. The dam is located just downstream of the town of Wolf Creek, Montana, in Cascade County. Construction of Holter Dam began in 1941 and was completed in 1945. The dam’s power plant went online in 1946. Holter constructed a small hydroelectric dam on the Missouri River near the town of Helena in 1876. A massive hydroelectric dam was built as a result of the initial small project, and it was completed in 1918. In 1854, Anton Holter, a Norwegian immigrant, arrived in the United States and established the dam. Holter was 23, working as an engineer on the project at the time. Because it provides electricity to the region, the dam is a popular fishing, boating, and wildlife observation spot today. Holter Dam is one of a series of hydroelectric, straight gravity dams on the Missouri River. The dam is a run-of-the-river dam because it can generate electricity without needing to store additional water supplies behind the dam.
