Red Rock Lakes Natl Wildlife Refuge

Red Rock Lakes NWR has often been called the most beautiful national wildlife refuge in the United States. The rugged Centennial Mountains, rising to more than 10,000 feet, provide a dramatic backdrop for this extremely remote refuge in southwest Montana's Centennial Valley. The refuge encompasses primarily high mountain, wetland-riparian habitat (the largest in the Greater Yellowstone Area) and is located near the headwaters of the Missouri River. Several creeks flow into the refuge, creating the impressive Upper Red Rock Lake, River Marsh, and Lower Red Rock Lake.

To film in Red Rock Lakes NWR, commercial filmmakers and photographers will need to apply for a permit with the refuge’s administrative office using the Commercial Activities Special Use Permit Application.

Visit the refuge's website for detailed information about the refuge. Visit FWS permits website to learn more about their permitting process. Also visit the Montana Film Office permits page to view maps and permitting info and the permit application.
