Lake Mason NWR is part of the Charles M. Russell Complex. Vegetation consists mainly of mixed-grass prairie (western wheatgrass, bluebunch wheatgrass, needle and thread, and prairie junegrass) with sagebrush scattered across the refuge. Wetlands are frequently dry, but are very productive for waterfowl and shorebirds when they have water.
To film in Lake Mason NWR, commercial filmmakers and photographers will need to apply for a permit with the refuge’s administrative office using the Commercial Activities Special Use Permit Application.
Visit the refuge's website for detailed information about the refuge. Visit FWS permits website to learn more about their permitting process. Also visit the Montana Film Office permits page to view maps and permitting info and the permit application.
