Hewitt Lake Natl Wildlife Refuge

The Hewitt Lake NWR lies in Phillips County, about 25 miles northeast of Malta. The general topography is rolling, mixed-grass prairie with the major drainage running in an easterly direction. The lake, enhanced by an earthen dam, creates a shallow 492 acre seasonal wetland. In most years the lake goes dry by late summer, but during the spring and after spring run-off, the lake attracts thousands of migratory birds.

To film in Hewitt Lake NWR, commercial filmmakers and photographers will need to apply for a permit with the refuge’s administrative office using the Commercial Activities Special Use Permit Application.

Visit the refuge's website for detailed information about the refuge. Visit FWS permits website to learn more about their permitting process. Also visit the Montana Film Office permits page to view maps and permitting info and the permit application.
