Grass Lake Natl Wildlife Refuge

Grass Lake NWR (originally Halfbreed Lake NWR) is part of the Charles M. Russell Complex. This 4,318 acre refuge contains three large wetlands which are filled by Cedar Creek. Highly productive stands of vegetation, western wheatgrass, prairie junegrass, and greasewood provide upland cover for nesting birds.

To film in Grass Lake NWR, commercial filmmakers and photographers will need to apply for a permit with the refuge’s administrative office using the Commercial Activities Special Use Permit Application.

Visit the refuge's website for detailed information about the refuge. Visit FWS permits website to learn more about their permitting process. Also visit the Montana Film Office permits page to view maps and permitting info and the permit application.
